First ever WPClipart contest is complete!
The contest accepted submissions from school-aged folks over the summer until Sept. 21st, 2008.
Due to a huge fall-off in page views and revenue at WPClipart I have not had the funds to sponsor another contest. I had originally hoped to make this a monthly feature -- perhaps this will happen in the future. I don't really know the cause of the drop; might be because I edit/move things around too much, or competition from other sites or because I package all the content to download and folks no longer need to visit the site. Not really sure -- but I will keep plugging away!
The contest was fun and we got some great submissions. Hope I can start it again. In the meantime you can check out all the details from the first contest below.
RESULTS I am thoroughly pleased with the number and quality of submissions to the first ever clipart contest here at WPClipart. Some of the artwork is so good I have to say I am truly honored to have the opportunity to host and display the excellent works submitted by the entrants.
This is most especially true for the winner of the high school division, a young woman who is undeniably gifted...
WINNER - High School:
Tyler A.
A home-schooler from Illinois who used GIMP and PSP to hand-draw her submissions. The characters are deceptively simple. Their details are revealed to us in the form and the play of light on the subjects -- be it the sweep of a balerina's hand, the sparkly in the eyes of the girl blowing bubbles . . . there is something very alive in the characters that Tyler creates.
WINNER - Middle School:
Luis Valenzuela
Who attends Las Palmas Middle School in California. Submissions were plentiful, varied, colorful, simple and fun. The storm cloud is really hot.
WINNER - Grade School:
Rushi Patel
Another Illinois native who goes to Virginia Lake Elementary, with the guts to pit himself against a whole lot of competition from upper-classmen. Bravo.

Announcement:
I am happy to announce what I hope will be a regular feature here at WPClipart -- the first clipart contest. The prizes will be in the form of Visa gift cards. This one will be broken up into three categories:RULES & INFORMATION:
- High school (grades 9-12)
$100 gift card- Middle school (grades 6-8)
$50 gift card- Grade school (grades 1-5)
$25 gift card
(If your school is broken up into different grades for middle/high, etc. we go by the grade number.)
Since the school year is winding down, this contest will run over the summer and end a bit after school starts, the deadline for submissions being September 21st, 2008. Winners will be announced on Monday, Sept. 29th, 2008. If all goes well the contest will then become a monthly feature.SUBMISSIONS:
- All materials submitted are agreed to be released into the Public Domain.
- The preferred file type for submissions is in PNG format, but I can convert them if necessary.
- Participants must be residents of the United States. (Due to prize distribution.. sorry) This contest is void in Puerto Rico and wherever prohibited and subject to all federal, state and local laws.
- All accepted submissions will be displayed on the contest results page along with the student's name and school name/location(state). Therefore, the student's name, school name and state of the school should accompany the submission.
- Additionally, a means to contact the student's parent or guardian should also be included. (email and/or phone number.) This will only be needed if the student's entry wins. The gift card will be sent either to the student or to a parent. The choice will be left to the discretion of the parent.
- WPClipart (i.e. Paul Sherman) will not be held liable for what someone may deem to be poor judgement, misspelling, or possible loss of submitted materials via email or for any other alleged damages due to or inherent in the competition.
- Submitted artwork should be original illustrations or photographs... the use of any copyrighted materials as a basis for the submission is strictly forbidden.
- Use of pre-existing images at WPClipart as a basis for the submission is certainly permitted, so long as the new image is substantially different...

Q & A:
- Can I submit more than one image?
As many as you'd like. If you're doing a good job, this will only increase your chances.
- What are my odds of winning?
Divide your number of entries by the total number of entries, then multiply that by the quality of your work (on a scale from 0-1, non-inclusive.) As you can see, there are two variables you might not know included -- the number of entries (which I will list below), and the quality of the work submitted (which is subjective.)
The contest is not a lottery, the entries will be judged by myself. My family, friends and associates are not eligible.
- How many entries are there so far?
By grade level
(as of Friday, 09/21/2008):9-12 6-8 1-5 50 31 2
- Will WPClipart be displaying all the entries?
Yes. So long as they are not offensive or found to be infringing anyone else's work. As soon as some entries come in, there will be a link to the display page from here.
- If I don't win, can I then NOT release my submission into the Public Domain?
Sorry, but no. WPClipart will be displaying the submissions as public domain (PD) works -- and once they have been listed as such it would be unfair to turn around and tell someone the item(s) are not PD. This would be true of any work so released... once PD, always PD.
- Shouldn't the contest be monthly?
Yes. But funds are not large, and since the contest is new, it may take some time to become well-know enough to garner interest (gather submissions.)
- Why have a contest, to somehow make money off of the kids' hard work?
While the site does make some money from advertising, the purpose of the WPClipart project has been, and will continue to be, as a resource for education -- for research and as a pool of raw artistic material. (In a "safe" environment, and easily searched.)
Because the site/project has become very popular, it has enabled me to put more money into the development of the site. The contest can help the project in two ways:
- The submissions will help add to the collection, both in numbers and quality.
- The contest will reward the talented and the generous (who submit their work) and lead to even more submissions.
If the above sparks more interest in the site, and revenues increase, then more money can be devoted to the contests, including the possibility of matching prizes going to the student's school as well as the winning student themself.
