WP Clipart Contest

[View Current Entries]

I am happy to announce the reboot of the WPClipart young artist contest. Will it finally be a monthly feature? I sure hope so. I've simplified things a lot, as there will be one winner. Can be anyone in junior/senior high school (or home-school equivalent.) Prize is a $100 Visa gift card. To recap:
  • anyone in junior/senior high school (or home-school equivalent)

  • Prize is a $100 Visa gift card

  • Contest runs to the last day of the month,
winner is announced 7 days later.

RULES & INFORMATION:

  • All materials submitted are agreed to be released into the Public Domain.

  • The preferred file type for submissions is in PNG format, (but I can convert them if necessary.)

  • Participants must be residents of the United States. (Due to prize distribution.. sorry) This contest is void in Puerto Rico and wherever prohibited and subject to all federal, state and local laws.

  • All accepted submissions will be displayed on the contest results page along with the student's name and school name/location(state). Therefore, the student's name, school name and state of the school should accompany the submission.

  • Additionally, a means to contact the student's parent or guardian should also be included. (email and/or phone number.) This will only be needed if the student's entry wins. The student's gift card will be mailed either to the student or to a parent. (The choice will be left to the discretion of the parent.)

  • WPClipart (i.e. Paul Sherman) will not be held liable for what someone may deem to be poor judgement, misspelling, or possible loss of submitted materials via email or for any other alleged damages due to or inherent in the competition.

  • Submitted artwork should be original illustrations or photographs... the use of any copyrighted materials as a basis for the submission is strictly forbidden.

  • Use of pre-existing images at WPClipart as a basis for the submission is certainly permitted, so long as the new image is substantially different...

  • Participants should have fun while seeking their fame and fortune.

Q & A:
  • Can I submit more than one image?
As many as you'd like. If you're doing a good job, this will only increase your chances.

  • What are my odds of winning?
Divide your number of entries by the total number of entries, then multiply that by the quality of your work (on a scale from 0-1.) As you can see there are but two variables; the number of entries you will be able to track on the submissions page -- the quality of your work, however, is subjective.

The contest is not a lottery, the entries will be judged by myself. My family, friends and associates are not eligible.

  • How many entries are there so far?
    Contest Entries
    as of Tuesday, 02/08/2011
    0

  • Will WPClipart be displaying all the entries?
Yes. So long as they are not offensive or found to be infringing anyone else's work. As soon as some entries come in, there will be a link to the display page from here.

  • If I don't win, can I then NOT release my submission into the Public Domain?
Sorry, but no. WPClipart will be displaying the submissions as public domain (PD) works -- and once they have been listed as such it would be unfair to turn around and tell someone the item(s) are not PD. This would be true of any work so released... once PD, always PD.

  • Why have a contest, to make money from the kids' hard work?
While the site does make money from advertising, the purpose of the WPClipart project has been, and will continue to be, as a resource for education -- for research illustration and as a pool of raw artistic material, all in a "safe" environment, and easily searched.

Because the site/project has become very popular, it has enabled me to put more money into the development of the site, now run on a dedicated server, separate DNS service, regular backups, etc... and now, once again, sponsoring a contest. The contest can help the project in two ways:

    1. The submissions will help add to the collection, both in numbers and quality.

    2. The contest will reward the talented and the generous who submit their work. Hopefully this leads to even more submissions, and more good work will be put into the public domain for others to use and build upon.

If the above sparks more interest in the site, and revenues increase, then more money can be devoted to the contest, including the possibility of matching prizes going to the student's school as well as the winning student themself.
